Class Description:

SIGHTLINE Performance/Acting Class  and The PLANT Choir United (Ages 12–18)
Sing! Shine! Act! This year, our Performance Class and Choir join forces to present
the beloved musical, Little Women—two classes combined into one dynamic
experience.
The class begins with students preparing for auditions for the musical. Students may
audition for acting roles, singing roles, or participate in the chorus, which includes a
mix of acting and group singing. Not all roles require solo singing, and no prior
singing experience is necessary.
Training includes singing, acting, audition technique, and improvisation, along with
exposure to musical theatre history—all in a fun, encouraging environment.

More than just a production, this is a full theatre experience. Students will take part
in two required set-build sessions and complete light coursework, including
memorization, quizzes, and active rehearsal participation.
Led by veteran director Diana Turner with 25+ years in youth theatre who has directed and produced multiple plays and musicals along with Lara Moore, a professionally trained lyric soprano and has been teaching private voice lessons and leading various choirs as well as directing musicals for over 25 years. Your students will receive high-quality, hands-on training that prepares them for the stage—and beyond.

Tech/Dress Rehearsal Week and all performances are mandatory.

Students Will:

  • Learn auditioning skills and prepare for the acting and singing audition
  • Perform and present the musical, “Little Women” with 4 performances
  • Master the “actor’s toolbox” by unpacking professional techniques of theatrical voice, movement, and creativity
  • Complete in-depth character studies of their role
  • Engage in acting/singing exercises, and drama games
  • Learn current acting and singing techniques and skills
  • Create theatrical improvisation
  • Learn set building and costume making skills

Homework:

Students will need to come to each blocking rehearsal with the lines for the scenes being rehearsed that day  memorized (usually 1-3 scenes from the play per week). There will be a few written assignments required such as a character analysis worksheet and blocking for their monologue. There will be a few quizzes on acting terms. Review of lines and blocking at home is required each week.

Grading:

A traditional letter grade will be assigned based on completion of homework assignments, line and blocking memorization done by the deadline, and 2-4 quizzes/tests done each semester.

Requirements

Volunteers:

Putting a a major production takes many helping hands. At least one parent/sibling/family friend is REQUIRED to volunteer to help us with one or more of the following areas: advertising, ticket sales, refreshment sales, cast meals, costume changes, programs, tech work, stage managing, costume making, and set building. Parents need to sign up for at least one area.

Costumes:

We have a large collection of costumes and props, so most costumes will be provided. However, students may need to bring/buy some of their basic pieces- such as shoes, pants, dress shirt or socks. We often make costumes and costumes pieces at set builds. Sewing volunteers are greatly appreciated.

Extra Rehearsals/Coaching:

Students will need to meet once or twice with Mrs. Turner individually outside of class for a Character Work to refine their role.  During the last month of class, as we start running the entire show, rehearsals on Thursdays may be extended or we may call for an extra rehearsal if we find it is needed.

During the 1st Performance Week (Beginning April 21st):

There will be at least 3 extra rehearsals in the evenings at the Venue- a Load In/Technical Rehearsal and 2 Dress Rehearsals.

Set builds:

Students are required to attend at least 2 set builds during the year involving building and painting the sets as well as making costumes and props . These occur at Mrs. Turner’s house usually every other Saturday beginning in January. Students will learn painting techniques and acquire stage crafting skills as well as enjoy the fellowship and fun of creating with their peers. Friends and family are invited to help.
