Who is this class for? 

Students with all skill levels in art with thrive in this class. 

Class Description:

Discover the vibrant world of Medieval art! From Illuminated manuscript to sained glass, mosaics, sculpture, and religious-themed paintings, students will apply what they learn about this historical period to their won works of art. Class time will be filled with drawing, painting, clay work, printing, and other media exposure throughout the year. Concise historical context, the study of iconic period pieces and studio projects will enhance your students understanding of this era and grow their creativity so that they can create beautiful works of art. 

The Students will:

  • Explore and experiment with a variety of art materials (e.g., pencil, charcoal, watercolor paint, acrylic paint, oil paint, printing ink, clay, mosaics, nature objects, etc.).
  • Learn how to properly use and maintain different types of art tools.
  • Recognize and name specific medieval artists by looking at the style and subject of their work.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the Middle Ages historical context which influenced medieval art.
  • Understand the elements of art (e.g., line, shape, form, value, scale, texture, space, and color)and principles of design (e.g., unity, balance, center of interest, contrast, movement, andpattern) and use them to create and analyze a variety of works.
  • Identify and create different art genres (e.g., portrait, still life, landscape, etc.).
  • Maintain a working sketchbook to practice techniques learned in class, such as value studies or contour drawing.
  • Design a culminating multi-media project that reflects the themes used during the medieval art era.
  • Create and maintain a portfolio of work created in this class.
  • Assemble a display board for artwork for the spring art show.

Homework:

Most of the students projects will be done in class, but some work will need to be completed at home. 

Grades: 

Student will be given a letter grade based on their participation, completed art assignments and quizzes.
